The Division of Legal Services (DLS) has an immediate opening for a Deputy Chief of Litigation to support the Chief of Litigation.

Annual Salary: $106,859.04

Job Location: Statewide. This position may be housed at any DLS location, with offices in Kansas City, St. Louis, Cape Girardeau, Springfield, and Jefferson City.

Scheduled Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (with flexibility to accommodate professional goals and workload).

Why you’ll love this position: The DLS Litigation Unit is one of the largest government litigation units in the State of Missouri. At DLS, we strive for providing quality legal representation to our clients while maintaining integrity and a collaborative team atmosphere. This is a fast-paced senior management position with a variety of duties that include working with litigation managers, court partners, and our clients to provide seamless and effective legal representation to facilitate permanency, protect privacy of our records, prosecute hotline appeals in circuit court, and improve our practices statewide through policy implementation and revision.

What you’ll do: In partnership with the other Deputy Chief of Litigation, this position will supervise managing attorneys and oversee statewide management activities in the Litigation Unit; develop, implement, and manage litigation strategies and practice models; review and revise policies in collaboration with our clients; and partner with clients and court partners to detect and problem solve emerging issues. This position may also monitor privacy law policies and implementation; and write contracts as needed. This position will require regular in-state daytime travel to court hearings or meetings with the client or court partners. Although at times more frequent travel may be necessary, this position is anticipated to require full-day or overnight travel approximately 4-6 days per month, to include meetings with the DLS regional and central offices.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications required include a Juris Doctor from an accredited institution and being a member of The Missouri Bar. Qualified candidates will have courtroom litigation experience of no less than 4 years, and at least 5 years’ experience working in the child welfare or juvenile law systems, or providing other legal or legal-adjacent services to vulnerable populations. Management experience is preferred but not required. Project management experience preferred. Excellent research and writing skills are required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership talent with an emphasis on improving productivity and creating team solidarity at the systemic level.

Pursuant to State Law, this position requires accreditation, licensure, and/or professional license which is only available to holders of specific post-secondary degrees.
