Job Description

The Senior Director of Legal Operations & Strategic Enablement is a trusted member of the Legal Affairs and Policy Senior Leadership Team who serves as a strategic thought partner and change agent for the Chief Legal Officer and the SVP of Legal Affairs. This role is responsible for a wide range of functions supporting departments across the Legal Affairs Division, responsible for driving execution of the division's long term strategic priorities, allowing departmental leadership to focus on delivering best in class services to the enterprise. Responsibilities in this position include leading strategic divisional and departmental initiatives to design and improve processes, identify and implement solutions to resource and prioritization issues, and manage programs and projects related to reporting and insights from the larger Legal Affairs Division portfolio of matters. This leader of the Legal Operations function will work to develop strong and productive relationships across the enterprise to influence and inform the allocation of resources across the division toward the various strategic needs of the enterprise.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees a team of legal operations and strategy enablement professionals dedicated to assessing and improving the operational functionality of the Legal Affairs teams (Legal, Risk, Ethics and Compliance, and Public and Government Affairs) and identifying, translating, and executing strategies or operational divisional objectives. 
  • Takes a leading role in driving culture change in the Legal Affairs and Policy Division focused on delivering as One Division proactive, value add, services with a client-oriented focus, stimulating innovation enterprise wide and fosters a positive and inclusive legal culture that promotes collaboration, diversity, and continuous learning. 
  • Establishes a cross-divisional operating model for Legal Affairs to guide the organization by developing and supervising cohesive strategic plans, streamlining workflows, and developing an operational roadmap focused on enhancement and alignment to organizational priorities and risk mitigation. 
  • Partners with CLO, and SVP of Legal Affairs, as well as FP&A and departmental leadership, on budgeting and forecasting process for the legal affairs division. 
  • Exerts influential leadership to ensure understanding and connection across functions to help determine dependencies, impact, and building of new capabilities. Focuses on maturing business capabilities and processes which will be used as inputs when partnering with Business Quality and Product Management in the execution and prioritization of optimization initiatives against Enterprise efforts. 
  • Manages special projects and initiatives on behalf of the Chief Legal Officer or SVP of Legal Affairs, focusing on operational effectiveness and engagement of key stakeholders through strong influential leadership. 
  • Works with cross functional leaders to establish and measure Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), SLAs, and financial targets. Develops and enforces budget governance standards to ensure fiscal responsibility within the Legal Affairs Division recommending how to optimize external and internal spend by identifying opportunities for efficiency to ensure optimal utilization of resources cross departmentally. 
  • Provides expert and strategic support and act as a key advisor to the Legal Affairs Senior Leadership Team to create, establish and communicate a constantly evolving long range strategy for Legal Affairs. Partner with Communications to drive the sharing and realization of long-term legal vision, change management, and operational initiatives not only within the team, but with the broader organization. 
  • Promotes and facilitates diagnosis of workflow impediments and other wastes through the Legal Affairs and Policy function and works with Enterprise Quality on solutions or tools to eliminate them. 
  • Utilizes data analytics and market insights to drive informed decision-making and translate metrics into a meaningful story that can be effectively communicated with executive level leadership. 
  • Performs other duties as requested or assigned. 

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; 3+ years in a leadership role. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and willingness to lead as a change agent. 
  • Experience developing strategic planning materials that required consensus gathering and collaboration from multiple stakeholders. 
  • Strong partnering and influencing skills. 
  • Ability to multi-task in a complex and fast-paced inter-disciplinary legal environment. 
  • Ability to convey information in a clear, concise, and logical manner. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information. 
  • Skillsets in people leadership, team building, staff development, and mentoring across reporting lines. 
  • Excellent prioritization, problem solving and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to exercise a flexible and curious mindset. 
  • Demonstrated ability to independently move projects forward by gaining support from others and proactively going the extra steps to produce meaningful results. 
  • Ability to deliver outstanding customer service and stand in the shoes of the client to understand needs and pain points. 
  • Future oriented with a demonstrated ability to forecast future needs and consequences and communicate and inspire a shared purpose and advance goals and priorities. 

Base Pay Information

The national base pay range at the end is a good-faith estimate of what Delta Dental may pay for new hires. Actual pay may vary based on Delta Dental's assessment of the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), related experience, education, certifications and ability to meet required minimum job qualifications. Other factors impacting pay include prevailing wages in the work location and internal equity. $140,700 to $305,000
