The Job Description

Responsible for assisting with varied and complex research activities, analysis and resolution of legal issues, and preparation and processing of legal documents.

Responsibilities

  • Perform legal assignments that are varied and complex in character but usually involving relatively limited responsibilities. Work is subject to review by others.
  • Research state and federal laws applicable to the annuity legal issues being addressed. Update the 50 state surveys used by the Annuity Operations Department and the Annuity’s Legal Department to address the legal issues encountered by Annuity’s Operations.
  • Assist in analyzing and resolving legal issues relating to claims and customer complaints submitted by the Annuity’s Operations department. Make basic decisions when presented with legal issues that have been previously encountered. Supervisor approval will be required for other decisions.
  • Assist in creating written policies and procedures regarding the law and parameters to follow in analyzing and responding to the Annuity Operation’s legal issues.
  • May have direct interaction with internal clients in Annuity’s Operations Department and internal counsel.
  • Assist securities attorney in drafting and managing fund participation and related agreements/amendments and maintaining the contract database.
  • Perform special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of paralegal experience.
  • 2 years formal legal training or equivalent.
  • Proficiency using MS Office.
  • Legal research experience with Lexis or Westlaw.
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving environment, meet deadlines and follow through.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Capable of communicating effectively with co-workers and those in other departments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, pre-law or other relevant field.
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task.
  • Ability to handle a full workload in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to think critically and analytically, problem solve, and make recommendations.
  • Ability to anticipate and recognize issues based on experience.
  • Ability to prioritize work within assigned caseload.
  • Variable annuity product experience a plus.

Compensation

  • The US salary for this position generally ranges between $60,000 - $70,000 annually. This range is an estimate, based on potential employee qualifications and operational needs. Salary may vary above and below the stated amounts, as permitted by applicable law.
  • Additionally in the US, this position is typically eligible for an Annual Bonus based on the Company Bonus Plan/Individual Performance and is at the Company’s discretion.
