Description

Chronicle Books is looking for a Contracts Manager. The person in this role will report directly to the Director of Contracts and will be primarily responsible for drafting agreements for properties acquired by the editorial staff.

The Contracts Manager will also review and comment upon agreements drafted by third parties, ensuring consistency of contract terms with company policies and goals, They will maintain and update the boilerplate contracts as required by changes in procedure or law. The Contracts Manager will also negotiate contractual and boilerplate issues with authors, illustrators, licensors, and agents. They will draft and administer reversions of rights letters and enter details for contracts in the Publisher’s royalty accounting system. In addition, the Manager will answer questions concerning digital rights, audio rights, legal and/or contractual issues or will refer the querent to the appropriate parties.

Employees at Chronicle Books follow a flexible hybrid schedule of working a minimum of 3 days per week and up to 4 days per week in our San Francisco office, depending on project and business needs. Please note that this job description is not designed to cover all the activities required of the employee.

Hiring Salary Range

$68,000/yr - $78,200/yr. This range represents the anticipated low and high end of the expected salary for this position and will be determined by factors including but not limited to: applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, and geographic location as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This position is also eligible for our profit share plan.

Requirements

The position requires proficiency in Word and Excel and four to six years of experience working with contracts, including negotiation skills and an understanding of issues affecting the publishing business. Experience drafting and negotiating licensing agreements, and familiarity with intellectual property law, including copyright and trademark law, is preferred. The Manager must have strong organizational skills, experience in working with deadlines, the ability to handle several tasks at once, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as a team member.
